Utseende rediger

Middelsstore til ganske store (4-14 millimeter), kraftige mygg med korte antenner. Beina er lange og tynne. På farge er de svarte eller mørkbrune, thorax er ofte helt eller delvis oransjerød. De aller fleste artene er ikke påfallende hårete. Som hos andre hårmygg er det stor forskjell på kjønnene: hunnene er større og kraftigere, med bredere vinger, hodet er lite med vidt skilte fasettøyne. Hos hannene dekker fasettøynene det meste av hodet, kroppen er mindre og spinklere, bakkroppen ganske tynn. Vingene er ofte røykfargede, men kan også være klare med mørke striper langs årene (hos noen søramerikanske arter, særlig Plecia plagiata). Slekten kan kjennes på at vingeåren R2+3 (den åren som munner ut nest nærmest vingespissen på oversiden) er kort og mer eller mindre krum, ikke parallell med den underforliggende åren som hos slekten Penthetria. Hannens kjønnsorganer kan være ganske ulikt utviklet hos denne slekten, ulikt andre hårmygg-slekter der utformingen er ganske lik. Hos de fleste nålevende (men ikke mange av de fossile) artene har kjønnsorganenes gripeorgan (gonostylus) vandret innover, er festet nær kroppsaksen og åpner nedover, mens den hos andre hårmygg er festet ute på sidene og åpner innover. Larvene er gråbrune, med tykk, læraktig hud som bærer mange fingeraktige utvekster.

Levevis rediger

Larvene lever selskapelig i jorda, som vanlig for hårmygg. Plecia-artene er vanlige i skog, også på dyrket mark. I alle fall for noen arter kan det forekomme store masse-sverminger, særlig kjente er de hos den nordamerikanske arten Plecia nearctica i det sørøstlige USA og Plecia longiforceps i Øst-Asia.

Utbredelse rediger

I dag finnes slekten bare i tropiske og subtropiske områder, men fossiler er kjent fra et langt videre område. Dette viser et varmere klima i disse områdene i tidligere tidsperioder.

Fossiler rediger

I tillegg til de nålevende artene er det beskrevet tallrike arter fra fossiler, men det er usikkert hvor mange av disse som er reelle [1]. I avsetninger fra tertiær er denne slekten ofte blant de aller vanligste insekt-fossilene. Den eldste arten plassert i denne slekten er Plecia myersi Peterson, 1975 [2] fra Øvre Kritt, ca. 73 millioner år før nåtid.
