Uncle Meat

Uncle Meat er det femte studioalbumet til the Mothers of Invention, utgitt som et dobbeltalbum i 1969. Uncle Meat ble først utviklet som en del av No Commercial Potential, et project som dannet tre andre album som deler samme konsept: We're Only in It for the Money, Lumpy Gravy og Cruising with Ruben & the Jets. Albumet var også planlagt til å ble et soundtrack til en planlagt science fiction-film som aldri ble ferdigprodusert, men en video med prøvefilming ble utgitt av Frank Zappa i 1987. Musikken har ulike stilarter, med orkester, jazz, blues og rock. Bakgrunn

Frank Zappa, som hadde vært interessert i film siden high school, bestemte seg for å utvikle filmmusikk for the Mothers of Invention, med tittelen Uncle Meat. Den tenkte filmen skulle kombinere elementer av vitenskap og historier inspirert av bandets seksuelle eskapader. Dermed begynte Zappa å jobbe med et prosjekt kalt No Commercial Potential, som etter hvert ble til albumene We're Only in It for the Money, Lumpy Gravy, Cruising with Ruben & the Jets og Uncle Meat. Zappa uttalte at: «It's all one album. All the material in the albums is organically related and if I had all the master tapes and I could take a razor blade and cut them apart and put it together again in a different order it still would make one piece of music you can listen to. Then I could take that razor blade and cut it apart and reassemble it a different way, and it still would make sense. I could do this twenty ways. The material is definitely related».

Kunstneren Cal Schenkel uttalte: «I started working on the story of Ruben and the Jets that is connected with the Uncle Meat story, which is this old guy turns this teenage band into these dog snout people ... We started that before it actually became Ruben and the Jets. That came out of my love for comics and that style, the anthropomorphic animals, but also it was part of a running story line».

Innspilling

Zappa benyttet først Apostolic Recording Studios i Manhattan, der han brukte en 12-spors maskin bygget av Scully Recording Instruments. Zappa brukte en mengde overdubbinger, spilte på sjeldent brukte instrumenter der han også brukte studioeffekter, og både øket og senket farten på innspillingene for å få spesielle effekter. Zappa ville lage et album som skulle utfordre tidens musikkfans, fordi han følte at hans tilhengere var «vant til å godta alt han hadde presentert for dem ... politisk, musikals, sosialt – alt!». Ingen i fanskaren hans ville protestere. Han uttalte at: «Det var min oppgave den tiden å gjøre ting som ville vekke folk ut av det nåværende eller uvitenhet og få dem til å stille spørsmål angående en del ting».

Selv om Lowell George, kommende Mothers og Little Feats rytmegitarist ikke spilte på albumet, som var ferdiginnspilt før han ble med i bandet, er han med på albumets cover og pamflett.

Musikk og tekst

Uncle Meat inneholder mange musikksjangere, inkludert orkestersymfonier, jazz, blues, doo wop og rock and roll. Albumet inneholder også talte ord og segmenter med «Suzy Creamcheese», og har et sterkere fokus på slagverksinstrumenter enn på noen tidligere komposisjoner av Zappa, og legger stor vekt på Zappas evner som komponist, musiker og arrangør.

«Nine Types of Industrial Pollution» er musikalsk formløs med røtter i slagverksinstrumenter. Den inneholder riktignok en gitarsolo i en senere versjon. «Dog Breath, in the Year of the Plague» er en rock and roll-låt med et tema som blir repetert senere på albumet i en instrumentallåt, spilt med keyboard, rytmeinstrumenter og akustisk gitar. Rock and roll-versjonen inneholder tre vers der det første refrenget blir sunget av operasangeren Nelcy Walker, og i det andre refrenget er farten økt. Etter det tredje verset, er låten blitt til et avant garde orkesterstykke framført med rytmeinstrumenter, keyboard og andre instrumenter. I albumet står det om låten: «The weird middle section of DOG BREATH (after the line "Ready to attack") has forty tracks built into it. Things that sound like trumpets are actually clarinets played through an electric device made by Maestro with a setting labeled Oboe D'Amore and sped up a minor third with a V.S.O. (variable speed oscillator). Other peculiar sounds were make[sic] on a Kalamazoo electric organ. The only equipment at our disposal for the modification of these primary sounds was a pair of Pultec Filters, two [Lang Equalizers], and three Melchor Compressors built into the mixing console. The board itself is exceptionally quiet and efficient (the only thing that allowed us to pile up so many tracks) and is the product of Mr. Lou Lindauer's imagination & workmanship».

I tillegg til studioinnspillinger, har Uncle Meat også noen konsertopptak innspilt i Royal Albert Hall, inkludert en innspilling av Don Preston som spiller «Louie Louie» på orgelet i Albert Hall. Mot slutten av låten annonserer Zappa at låten har bltt framført av «London Philharmonic Orchestra». Den doo wop-inspirerte «Electric Aunt Jemima» refererer til Zappas gitarforsterker.

Albumet avsluttes med «King Kong», en låt i 3/8-takt selv om den instrumentale innledningen, en jazz-improvisasjon over med en rytmeseksjon går i en 5/8-takt, kan høres tidligere i albumet. Seks varianter av låten framføres i slutten av albumet, der den enkle melodien først spilles, så spilles den av et Fender Rhodes Electric Piano av Preston, tredje gang spilles den som en saksofon–solo av «Motorhead» Sherwood, og den fjerde er med Bunk Gardner som spiller sopransaksofon med forskjellige elektroniske effekter. To variasjoners til konkluderer stykket, med en liveinnspilt saksofonsolo av Ian Underwood og til slutt en versjon raske gonger, overblåste saksofoner og instrumenter.

Utgivelse og mottagelse

Uncle Meat ble utgitt som et dobbeltalbum av Bizarre og Reprise Records, med undertittelen: «Most of the music from the Mothers' movie of the same name which we haven't got enough money to finish yet». På tross av albumets eksperimentelle natur, klatret det opp til nr. 43 på Billboard listene.

Kritisk mottagelse

Senere tids beskrivelse av albumet er positiv, man har forståelse for at albumet er viktig innen Zappas diskografi. The New Rolling Stone Album Guide beskrev albumet som «inspired monstrosity ... an assault of glorious noise». AllMusic-skribenten Steve Huey skrev: «despite the absence of a conceptual framework, the unfocused sprawl of Uncle Meat is actually a big part of its appeal. It's exciting to hear one of the most creatively fertile minds in rock pushing restlessly into new territory, even if he isn't always quite sure where he's going».

Annet

I 1987 ble en Uncle Meat-film utgitt på video og albumet ble utgitt på nytt som et dobbeltalbum inkludert en låt som ble innspilt i 1982, «Tengo Na Minchia Tanta», sunget på siciliansk og italiensk av Massimo Bassoli. Med på videoen er ca. 40 minutter med lyder og dialoger fra filmen. Den originale vinylmiksen fra 1969 ble utgitt på nytt i 2016 som en del av samleboksen Meat Light.
