Gabriela er dannet som en feminin form av Gabriel, som har hebraisk opprinnelse og er en sammensetning av to navneledd der det første betyr «mann» eller «sterk» og det andre «Gud».

Utbredelse rediger

Formen Gabriella er kjent brukt i Sverige fra 1713. Både Gabriela og Gabriella var mest populært i Sverige i perioden 1970–1999. Formen Gabrielle er kjent brukt i Norge fra 1790 og i Sverige fra 1860. I begge land har navnet vært mest brukt fra 1970 og utover, i Norge spesielt i de nordligste landsdelene.

Gabriela er i dag vanlig i mange spansk- og portugisisk-talende land, i tillegg til i flere land i Sentral-Europa. En annen utbredt form av navnet er franske Gabrielle. I tillegg er formene Gabriele, Gabriel og Gabriella vanlige i enkelte land.
