Peter Skagestad

(Finn) Peter Skagestad (født 27. juni 1947 i Alta) er en norsk/amerikansk filosof og idéhistoriker og sønn av teologen Gunnar Skagestad. Han har siden 1978 vært bosatt i Brookline, Massachusetts i USA. Gift samme år med Elaine Ober, senere ervervet amerikansk statsborgerskap.

Etter påbegynte studier ved Universitetet i Oslo fra 1966 til 1967 og videre studier ved Davidson College i Nord-Carolina fra 1967 til 1968, avla Skagestad i 1970 B.A. magna cum laude - eksamen i filosofi, ved Brandeis University i Massachusetts. I 1973 tok han Ph.D. graden ved samme universitetet med avhandlingen «R.G. Collingwood's Theory of Presuppositions: Its Origin and Development and Contemporary Philosophical Significance».

Skagestad har dessuten tolkeeksamen i russisk fra Forsvarets russiskkurs (1976) ; og i 1985 M.A.L.D.-grad i internasjonal handel og finans, ved Fletcher School, Tufts University i Medford, Massachusetts.

Undervisning og forskning

Peter Skagestad underviste i årene 1974-1977 i filosofi ved Universitetet i Oslo, og var i årene 1976-1979 forskningsstipendiat i idéhistorie ved Norges almenvitenskapelige forskningsråd (NAVF), samt gjesteforsker i filosofi ved Harvard University 1976/1977 og 1978/79. Skagestads senere akademiske løpebane omfatter engasjementer som professor/gjesteforeleser innen filosofi, idéhistorie og makroøkonomi ved flere amerikanske universiteter og høyere læreanstalter.

I sin tidlige karriere gjorde Skagestad seg bemerket for sin kritikk av Arne Næss' positivisme, samtidig som han var den første som introduserte språkfilosofen Noam Chomsky for et allment norsk publikum.

Som forsker og forfatter er Peter Skagestad i dag mest kjent for sine analyser av amerikansk pragmatisme (fra Charles Peirce's pionerarbeider og frem til i dag), samt sine til dels banebrytende studier innen evolusjonær epistemologi og semiotikk.

Samtidig med sin virksomhet innen akademia har hatt Skagestad vært engasjert i kommersielle foretak innen språktjenester og forlagsvirksomhet.

Peter Skagestad er bror av Odd Gunnar Skagestad og nevø av Finn Peter Petersen.
