Homer H. Dubs

Homer Hasenpflug Dubs, oftest kjent som Homer H. Dubs (født 1892 i Deerfield i Illinois i USA; død 1969) var en britisk sinolog av amerikanisk herkomst.

Homer H. Dubs, slik som så mange andre foregangsmennene innen tidlig amerikansk sinologi, ble eksponert for emnet under sin oppvekst som misjonærbarn i Kina. Han tilbragte sin barndom i provinsen Hunan.

Han studerte først ved Oberlin College og fortsatte så filosofi ved Yale University der han ble uteksaminert i 1914. Senere tok han flere akademiske grader ved Columbia University og Union Theological Seminary i New York City. Han returnerte til Kina som misjonær, og studerte kinesisk i Nanjing før han dro inn til misjonsfeltet i Hunan. Etter hjemkomsten fra Kina tok Dubs doktorgrad i filosofi i 1925 ved University of Chicago med en dissertasjon om den kinesiske filosofen Xun Zi (Hsün-tzu). Etterpå underviste han i filosofi ved University of Minnesota (1925–27) og så ved Marshall College (1927–34).

Dubs ble senere professor for kinesisk ved Oxford University. Han er kjent for sin oversettelse av de første bøkene av Det tidlige Han-dynastiets historie (History of the Former Han Dynasty; kinesisk: Hanshu). Han viet sin allsidige forskning i stor grad til utviklingen av tidlig kinesisk filosofi, ikke minst den kinesiske filosofen Xun Zis liv og virke.
