Honestie Hodges (2006–2020) var en amerikansk tenåring fra Grand Rapids i Michigan som ble utsatt for politivold da hun var elleve år gammel, noe som førte til at det lokale politiet innførte en ny retningslinje som beskrev hvordan politiet skulle opptre overfor barn og unge.[1]

Pågrepet av politiet som elleveåring rediger

Da hun var elleve år gammel ble hun satt i håndjern den 6. desember 2017 av politiet i Grand Rapids, som var på utkikk etter en voksen kvinne som var mistenkt for knivstikking med døden til følge.[2][3] Elleveåringen hadde vært på vei ut av sitt hjem sammen med sin mor og en tante, og da politiet grep fatt i Honestie ropte hennes mor flere ganger at datteren bare var elleve år gammel.[1] Politiet rettet også skytevåpen mot Honestie under aksjonen, som for øvrig forløp relativt rolig fra politiets side.[4]

Konsekvenser for politiet rediger

Politiaksjonen da Honestie Hodges ble arrestert ble dokumentert av en av politimennenes kroppskamera, og bildene ble spredt i hele USA og ble møtt med sterke reaksjoner blant publikum. Det førte til at politiet i Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids Police Department, GRPD) nedsatte en task force som utarbeidet en retningslinje for politiets opptreden overfor barn og unge.[5] Den nye retningslinjen ble fremlagt i dokumentet Youth Interaction Policy, som fikk tilnavnet «The Honestie Policy»[6] (norsk: «Honestie-retningslinjen»), og ble iverksatt i mars 2018.[7][2][8] GRDP presiserte i den forbindelse at det nå var nedfelt skriftlig at politifolkene i GR alltid skulle velge de minst inngripende tiltakene og metodene i møte med barn og unge.[7]

The Grand Rapids Police Department recognizes the impact of its involvement with youth. While youth are afforded the same constitutional protections as adults, the Grand Rapids Police Department acknowledges and appreciates the need for additional protective measures while encountering youth.

Hodges' død (av covid) i 2020 rediger

På sin fjortenårsdag den 9. november 2020 – under koronapandemien – ble Hodges innlagt på sykehus etter å ha fått påvist at hun var smittet av COVID-19. Hun døde av viruset 13 dager senere, den 22. november.[9]
