Babbacombe Lee

Babbacombe Lee er det syvende albumet til den britiske folkrock-gruppen Fairport Convention, utgitt i 1971, det er gruppens eneste konseptalbum, og det er første albumet der gruppen har med de samme medlemmene som på forrige album.

Dave Swarbrick fant en selvbiografisk beretning om John «Babbacombe» Lee i en antikvarisk bokhandel. Han ble inspirert av mannen som på 1800-tallet ble dømt til døden for drap og overlevde tre hengningsforsøk.

Det var ikke angitt navn på sporene på plateomslaget, isteden hadde Fairport Convention valgt å gruppere sangene i fem seksjoner, tre på side 1 og 2 på side 2. To av sporene i begynnelsen av seksjon 2 på side 1 er ikke skrevet av Fairport Convention men er tradisjonell låter, "St Ninian's Isle" og "Sailor's Alphabet".

1. John was hardly more than a bewildered observer at his own trial, not being allowed to say more than a few words. The tides of fate wash him to the condemned cell where he waits three sad weeks for his last night on earth. 07:32
2. When it comes, he cannot sleep, but when he does, a strange, prophetic dream comes to him, and helps him to bear the strain of his next day's ordeal as scaffold and its crew try in vain three times to take his life. 13:20
