Alexa Internet, Inc. var et amerikansk internettselskap som ble grunnlagt i 1996 i San Francisco av Brewster Kahle og Bruce Gilliat[3] og lagt ned 1. mai 2022.[4][5] Selskapet utviklet en verktøylinje (Alexa Toolbar) til nettleserne Google Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer og Mozilla Firefox.[6] Verktøylinjen ga brukeren bakgrunnsinformasjon om de besøkte nettstedene, men til gjengjeld formidlet den statistikk om surfingen tilbake til selskapet, som basert på denne informasjonen produserte rangerte oversikter over verdens mest besøkte nettsteder.

Selskapet Alexa Internet ble i 1999 solgt til konsernet Amazon.com.[3] I desember 2021 kunngjorde Alexa.com at driften ville opphøre 1. mai 2022.[4]

Alexa-rangering rediger

Alexa-rangering (Alexa Global Rank) ble et begrep knyttet til bedømming av populariteten til et nettsted.[5] Begrepet viste til den rangeringen nettstedet hadde på Alexas lister. Jo lavere siffer, jo mer populært var nettstedet. Siden brukerne ikke ble ansett som representative for den gjennomsnittlige nettbrukeren, ble rangeringens relevans omdiskutert. I desember 2021 besluttet Amazon å avvikle tjenesten med virkning fra 1. mai 2022.[5][4]
