GLAM-camp & hackathon at the Oslo-Kiel ferry (Note that this is only a prospect on a possible future event.)

We propose an open conference on the Oslo-Kiel ferry with the purpose of creating a intimate and personal meeting space between the GLAM community and the technical community, for the purpose of creating new and stunning applications and discussing common use cases. By using a boat like this for a conference everybody will be together for the whole duration of the conference, which will create a very intense experience and make it easier to communicate and coordinate.

The meetings and discussions will be held in parallel and in plenum, at meeting places in the ferry, and will continue over several days as we will be on a rundtrip from Oslo (Kiel?) to Kiel (Oslo?) and back again. During the stop in Kiel (Oslo?) it will be time for a short visit ashore.

If we are not able to hold the conference early enough in the fall we will try to hold a conference during the spring. We will probably not hold a conference like this during the winter because of the risk for bad weather, but then again they have Norwegian Christmas food in November and December.

Kiel – Oslo – Kiel rediger

It is not clear which direction is the "best", but if we go from Kiel to Oslo it is easier for people from Denmark and Germany, and also somewhat easier for people from southern Sweden. It will also make it possible with short visits to some of the best museums and galleries in Norway; for example Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art and National Museum of Art is within walking distance from the harbor and just outside walking distance is the Munch Museum, Viking Ship Museum and Norwegian Museum of Cultural History with its stave church form Gol. In addition there are several interesting places like Akershus Fortress and Norwegian National Opera and Ballet.

Cost & expences rediger

The cost for the conference cruise starts at either NOK 2095 (Approx. EUR 266 or USD 348) or NOK 2495 (Approx. EUR 317 or USD 414) depending on when we do the trip. This is the standard prices and includes internal cabins. It is possible to get better cabins with a view for additional cost, and also other increased accommodations. That is not included by default. It will be additional costs for internet lease as we expect increased use of internet compared to ordinary users. We also expect increased cost for our use of conference rooms for the complete trip, we don't expect to be able to remove all equipment for others to use the same rooms.

In one offer from Colorline they estimated a total cost of NOK 60 000 (Approx. EUR 7 600 or USD 9 900) for a package with 20 persons doing a roundtrip Oslo-Kiel-Oslo on monday 14. october: In this offer there is three-star outward facing cabins and a total of six hour in conference rooms. Each additional hour in a conference room will cost us NOK 600. The number of hours in conference rooms must probably be increased a lot.

Conversion rates between different currency will change and should only be taken as approximate values.

Food & accommodation rediger

Standard accommodation The offer to us
  • 2 nights accommodation in 3 star inside double cabins
  • Breakfast trip / return
  • 6 hours of conference including coffee / tea and fruit
  • 3-course menu "Cruise"
  • Eveningbuffet
  • Lunch including coffee and tea at the departure or return
  • Free show every day
  • 2 nights accommodation in 3 star outside facing double cabins
  • we need to increase the conference time and probably add an additional room

The ferry rediger

The conference will be held on either the MS «Color Magic» (2007) or the MS «Color Fantasy» (2004). They are similar, the difference is depending on which date we want to have the conference. Both ferries are large enough that most people will not experience seasickness.

We will board in Oslo (Kiel?) at 14:00 and arrive in Kiel (Oslo?) at 10:00 the next day. If we go for a roundtrip we will then return at 14:00 the same day.

We will stay on the ferry for two nights, in either inside or outside three star double cabins. There will be breakfast on both trip and return, coffee and fruit during the conference, and a 3-course cruise menu. Lunch at the departure or return. There will also be an evening buffet. Every day there will be a free show if someone needs a break from the conference.

Technical rediger

On-board we will have a satellite link to the rest of the internet. For regular surfing this will be almost like an ordinary internet connection. For those that needs to interact with servers ashore it will be somewhat sluggish.

If we need higher speeds than the usual on the ferry we can get that. (We know where an expert lives!')

For local experiments we will set up a local mirror on an on-site server. This will give us sufficient speed and flexibility to test out code. It will also make it possible for newcomers to test-drive their boots without destroying anything.

Project members and chapters rediger

We hope that one or more of the chapters from Norway, Sweden, Denmark or Germany will take the main responsibility for getting this event going, but we will probably need additional help too. Interested people can add their name below.
