Text Appearing Before Image:
rship the God ofMoses. • From Mount Sinai the course of the Israelites was for somedistance nearly due north, down a broad valley which descendsby a gradual slope from the tangled labyrinth of the Sinaiticgroup toward the crescent-shaped ridge of mountains, EtTilu, which forms the lofty buttress of the great desert. Theytarried for some time at Ilazeroth, ever memorable by reasonof the envious sedition of Miriam and Aaron. In this neigh-borhood they were miraculously fed with quails for a wholemonth. From the plain of Ilazeroth they ascended one ofthe passes of the Tilu, to the broad plains of the desert above. From this position they must have turned their course in anortheasterly direction, toward the head of the Gulf, or ad-vanced northward across the desert, toward the land ofCanaan. The latter route seemed to be distinctly mentionedby Moses in his recapitulation of their march through thisgreat and terrible wilderness, as they came to Kadesh Barnca. WANDERINGS OF THE ISRAELITES.
Text Appearing After Image:
EXPLANATION OF MAP. Dr. Robinsons admirable maps, executedby Kiepert under Dr. Robinsons personaldirection, afford tbe basis on which this andthe map of Palestine are constructed. Theplains on the south of Sinai arc representedin connection with that of Er Rabah, where, according to Dr. Robinson, the Israelitesprobably stood while the law was given ; tin*is done by simply modifying the plan of theSinaitic group. The plain of Sebaiyeh is seen extendingseveral miles on the south and east Sinai, offering a wider range for the hosts of I-ra.-l ;and this is assumed by Hitter and many othersto have been the station of the Israeliteswhen they received the law. The route and stations of the Israelites arequite conjectural after we leave Sinai. Thetrack of the Israelites, as sketched by Dr.Robinson, is indicated by tbe continuousred line. The deviations from this route are indicatedby the shorter— yellow linesThe deviations are indicated on the supposi-tion that the children of Israel occupied
