The peoplewho lived and ruled there did not loveand serve Him. So Christian menthought it would be a good and noble 49 thing to take Jerusalem from them.That is what men fought for in theWar of the Cross. Soldiers who went to this war werecalled Soldiers of the Cross. Each ofthem wore a cross upon his coat orcloak. The children saw their fathers andbrothers set out for the Holy Land,and heard a great deal about the longjourney over land and sea to Jeru-salem. Then they made crosses ofpaper or of cloth, and put them upontheir own clothing, and played at beinglittle Soldiers of the Cross. After a time, some of the biggerboys began to think it would be a bet-ter thing to go to the War of the Cross,and fight for Jerusalem, than to playat doing so.
