a from Newcastlebecame completely surrounded by an ice-pack to thenorth-east of Cape Race ; and only escaped thenext day owing to the shifting of the wind, whichopened up a channel behind her and enabled her toget clear. At one time she narrowly escapeddestruction between two 90 feet walls of ice; andthe captain took measurements of one iceberg,3300 feet long and 400 feet high. On Plate XLVI is shown a wirelesstelegraphy room on one of the C.P.R. steam-ships. The New World is the constant refuge of largenumbers of emigrants from the darkest and mostpoverty-stricken recesses of Europe ; in many casesthey are flying from countries that have not provedto be their motherlands, but harshest of stepfather-lands. Of this class are thousands of Jews forcedout of Russia by oppressive laws. One perhapswonders why the Canadian Pacific Railway and othershipping lines refuse
