Varangerhund dating

rediger

We currently have the dating at 3,800 BP It is not a wolf (Canis lupus). The source given for this is very poor ("Hundeeierens oppslagsbok," 1991). The Varangerhunden was discussed by Haaken Olsen, former curator at Osteological Collections at the University of Bergen, at the time of discovery, and it has always been referred to as "Canis familiaris (LIN)." "LIN" stands for Carl Nilsson Linnaeus, the man who invented the scientific name classification system. It is not a wolf (Canis lupus), nor do we know where it is from. It is always only referred to as a domesticated dog, Canis familiaris, There is no suggestion that this is a transitional species, a "primordal" dog, or that it is from Varanger. In fact, again and again reference is made to its similarity to the Bundsö dog, of a Neolithic settlement in Denmark. At one point Haakon Olsen even states, in comparing it to Bundsö, "You are not alone." To state that it is "Canis lupus varangensis, Canis familiaris varangensis" is apparently just Suzanne Fredriksson;s whimsical insertion of a "geographic" scientific classification name made by her, for unknow reasons, 30 years after it was discovered without ever seeing it and without any scientific bases.
