Angra do Heroísmo
Angra do Heroísmo (norsk meningsoversettelse: heltemotets bukt) er en portugisisk by på øya Terceira, som er en del av Azorene. Byen har ca. 35 000 innbyggere.

Tilnavnet do Heroísmo ble tildelt byen i 1829 av dronning Maria II, etter byens standhaftige kamp mot Marias motstander Miguel av Portugal. Dronning Maria søkte selv tilflukt her fra 1830 til 1833.[1]
Angra do Heroísmo er Azorenes eldste by, og fikk bystatus i 1534. Samtidig ble byen av pave Paul III opprettet som bispesete i Angra bispedømme.[2] Byggingen av katedralen begynte i 1570. Den ble sterkt skadet under et jordskjelv i 1980, og i 1982 falt begge tårnene ned. Etter en restaurering ble kirken innviet på ny i 1985.[3]
Festningene San Sebastião og San João Baptista er unike eksemplarer av militærarkitektur.[4]
Byen har eget universitet med to fakulteter. Angra var en viktig mellomstasjon for den transatlantiske handel og for handelen mot Øst-Asia. Bykjernen ble i 1983 oppført på UNESCOs liste over verdens kulturarv. UNESCO la vekt på at byen er «an outstanding example of a creation linked to the maritime world, within the framework of the great explorations» og «directly and tangibly associated with an event of a universal historic significance: the maritime exploration which permitted exchanges between the great civilizations of the Earth».[5]
