Pavel Grigorjevitsj Tsjesnokov (russisk: Павел Григорьевич Чесноков; født 24. oktober 1877, død 14. mars 1944) var en russisk komponist, kordirigent og musikklærer. Han komponerte over fem hundre korverk, av hvilke over fire hundre er sakrale. I dag er han mest kjent for Spasenie sodelal (salme 74,12) og Do not reject me in old age for kor og basso profundo-solo som er skrevet ned til kontra G.

Liv rediger

Pavel Tsjesnokov ble født i Vladimir, nær Moskva 24. oktober 1877. Han gikk på muskkonservatoriet i Moskva hvor han blant annet hadde sju år undervisning på både piano og fiolin og studerte komposisjon. Her studerte han under prominente russiske komponister som Sergei Taneyev og Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov, som fikk stor innflytelse på hans stil innen sakral kormusikk.

I ung alder ble han anerkjent som en stor dirigent og kormester, og han ledet flere kor. Han ble etterhvert ansatt ved konservatoriet, hvor han opprettet et korledelsestudium, som han ledet fra 1920 til sin død.

Da han var tretti år hadde han fullført nesten fire hundre korverk, men hans store produksjon av kirkemusikk stoppet opp ved den russiske revolusjon. Under kommunist-regimet var det forbudt å komponere sakral musikk, så Tsjesnokov skrev da ca. hundre profane korverk, og dirigerte sekulære kor, blant annet Bolsjojteaterets kor. Under Josef Stalins styre ble, som ledd i hans program for å indoktrinere ateismen, i 1933 en kirke jevnet med jorden for å gi plass til en ny skyskraper. Tsjesnokov hadde vært denne kirkens siste korleder, og som en følge av rivingen sluttet han helt med å skrive musikk.
