Beskrivelse

Caption from the source: "Bloomerism – an American custom", cartoon from Punch, 1851. Some American women appeared in the streets of London in a tunic and trousers, confirming a certain brassy stereotype.

The feminist "bloomer" attire received much ridicule in the mid-19th century. This cartoon seeks to associate it with women smoking, which was considered completely unfeminine during the Victorian period.
