Astyages thenspared Cyrus at the entreaty of the boy s mother, but punished Harpagus byslaying the latters son under circumstances of revolting cruelty. Harpagus pretended a continued loyalty, but, being secretly determined onrevenge, constantly urged his foster-child Cyrus to revolt against Astyages.This Cyrus did after he had succeeded his father on the subordinate throne ofPersia. He summoned all the Persian men to meet him, bidding each bring ahatchet.
