Beskrivelse Darcy Hadfield was the last of New Zealand's successful professional scullers. He is shown here on 5 January 1922, the day that he defeated Dick Arnst on the Whanganui River. Hadfield won by six lengths in a time of 19 minutes 45 seconds for the 3¼ miles (5.2-kilometre) course. A crowd of some 10,000 witnessed the contest. Hadfield had won New Zealand's first Olympic rowing medal, a bronze in the single sculls, at the 1920 Antwerp Games about 16 months earlier.
