English: Complete cast alloy crotal bell of Post Medieval date (AD 1500 - AD 1800). Length 35mm, diameter 32mm. Weight 36.89mm. The weight includes soil and iron corrosion.
The bell has a sub-rectangular suspension lug which is 10mm in length and 15mm in width and about 4mm thick. It has a perforation which is D-shaped in plan, the curved edge being uppermost. The spherical bell is divided horizontally into two equal halves by a prominent circumferential moulded rib. About mid-way between the suspension lug and the rib are two diametrically opposed circular sound holes, each of which is about 5mm in diameter. The lower decorated hemisphere has two sound holes that are similar in size and shape to the upper sound holes. These two holes are joined by an integral sound slit. The decoration is in the form of the characteristic "sunburst" design. Adjacent to the sound slit at either side is a maker's mark enclosed in a semi-circular area. One side has a letter W with a crudely etched star on either side. The other part of the maker's mark is indeterminate due to wear and corrosion. The bell is worn and also corroded. However a mid-brown patina survives in places. |
