Preferanseteori (eng., Preference theory) er en samfunnsvitenskapelig teori om kvinners investering i produktivt og reproduktivt arbeid, utviklet av Catherine Hakim.[1] Preferanseteorien er en historisk informert, empirisk basert, tverrfaglig teori om kvinners valg mellom lønnet arbeid og familiearbeid. Teorien legger til grunn at forskjeller i kvinners valg mellom som gjelder arbeidstid og karriereutvikling reflekterer kvinners orientering mot henholdsvis familie og arbeid.

Preferanseteorien er kontroversiell og har blitt imøtegått av andre forskere, det har gjennom flere år pågått en faglig debatt om teorien særlig i British Journal of Sociology.
