Beskrivelse

Beskrivelse A drawing of a Norwegian kanonjolle ("gun yawl"). These small, cheap vessels were armed with one 24-pound cannon aft, and sometimes two additional howitzers. The main weapon was aimed backwards; on the drawing one can see where the cannon was placed, in the aft of the boat, where two "skids" are visible, angling upwards towards the bow of the boat, to reduce the recoil. The cannon was fixed, so to aim the cannon sideways, the whole vessel had to be turned.

In combat, the vessel was rowed by its crew, for longer trips, masts were raised and sails were used. The Norwegian Navy used and constructed these vessels from 1600 until the middle- and last part of the 1800s, when they, of course, were completely obsolete. Despite their size, they made good use of themselves, protecting the long coast and narrow fjords with great success against larger vessels, such as the English frigate "Tartar", which escaped, heavily damaged, after a battle with three "kanonjoller" outside Bergen in 1808, known as the "Battle of Alvøen".

An English translation of the text below would be: a: Provisions, b: Round shots, c: Captain's locker, d: Artillerygoods, e: Bombs, f: Powder, g: Men's lockers, H: Bread, K: Crew's Cutlery L: Chains. (Note that the letter "I" is missing, probably due to possibility of confusion with other letters.)

Note that a few countries have copyright terms longer than 70 years: Mexico has 100 years, Jamaica has 95 years, Colombia has 80 years, and Guatemala and Samoa have 75 years. This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term. Honduras has a general copyright term of 75 years, but it does implement the rule of the shorter term. Copyright may extend on works created by French who died for France in World War II (more information), Russians who served in the Eastern Front of World War II (known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia) and posthumously rehabilitated victims of Soviet repressions (more information).
